Seven Years

Today (December 4), marks seven years since I moved to Japan. Seven years. That's a long time! When I moved here I figured I'd stay for a year or two and then move back, but that plan didn't exactly pan out, did it. At this point, I'm not sure I'll ever move back, but if I do, it certainly won't be anytime soon. I like it here quite a bit, if you haven't figured that out already. :)

In the process of confirming this today (I had to check my passport to be sure), I decided to make a record of every trip I've ever taken in the 10 years I've had this passport. Some random facts:

- First trip ever to Japan: Sept. 3, 1997
Flew out here to cover Fall TGS '97 for EGM. Met Hideo Kojima for the first time, met Koji Igarashi for the first time, went drinking in Osaka with the guy who made Contra (forget his name now), and hung out with some of the old #vidgames crew, including the dearly departed Dan Granett (RIP). My next trip was two months later in Nov. 1997 with none other than Ed Semrad, former editor-in-chief of EGM and storied world traveler. I think we spoke like three times the entire trip (bit of a generation gap there), but it was fun.

- # of times to Japan before moving here: 12
Most of these trips were for event coverage. TGS used to take place twice a year, plus every now and then the big pubs would have press events here. A couple of visits were girlfriend-related. Akihabara was raided more times than I can count.

- # of times to the US since moving to Japan: 22
Wow, more than I realized. E3 shows, GDC shows, visits to family and friends, and so on. I also flew home last year to be in NYC for the launches of both the PS3 and Wii. Yes, I was at both the Japanese and US launches for those two. How many psychos can say that? Not many.

- # of other countries visited since moving to Japan: 2
Went to Phuket (Thailand) once and went to Singapore once. Not much, but both trips were cool. Planning to hit a variety of places in 2008, including (hopefully) Europe and Korea.

My passport is beat to hell but it's got a lot of great memories attached to it. Here's to another seven years!

Wow! Just looking at your last post sent shivers down my spine! We've a lot in common. I just reached my sixth year here in Japan coming from the States myself. While you have me beat on the number of trips between Japan and the U.S. (I don't know whether to call you 'lucky' or not with that plane trip;.;), I only have two other countries listed in my passport as well - Honduras and Thailand (Phuket). I also thought I'd only be here a year or two but one thing lead to the next and I'm still here. Funny how things change and how even the little things can turn into big changes in life. Congrats on surviving and good luck on surviving the next seven years. It's not the easiest thing to do - but it sure is rewarding!

Just wait until they renew your passport and stick giant holes in your face when they void the old one!

Thanks, same to you! Agreed, it's been the most rewarding experience of my life and as a result, I've grown kind of attached to this place. :) Wouldn't have happened had it not been for all the great friends I've made here though, that's for sure.

Yeah, my passport expired actually, LOL. I need to renew it soon.

OH! MY CAR! I miss that thing. Did you know Shoe and Crispin both bought the exact same car (together, even) after I got mine? They got the next year's model though.

wow. you should get a flickr and put up all of your irc pics from back in the day. all we have is that stuff on vidgames.scene.org. and i have various things on my flickr, but just what i had myself and all of that is available now.

i mean, i don't even recognize that third pic. i'm sure i saw it in the past, but it doesn't ring a bell in 2007.

Ah that third one is from the #vidgames group on Facebook. Are you not in there? There's a few good ones there.

I gotta get a new passport :( We're planning on heading back to Thailand next year for a little bit...can't wait. Hard to believe how fast time flies. I never got a chance to meet Darkfact, unfortunately. Hell, I didn't get to meet much of the #vidgames crew.

hey, you rescued my ball! PS i don't remember what you looked like ^_^;;

i'm glad that i got a chance to spend a day/evening at darkfact's house before he died. we played a bunch of soul calibur, sat in the pool and talked, and had a great sushi dinner. that was a good time and i'll always remember it, particularly in light of what happened.

speaking of pics on my flickr:

Nice. I wish I had a decent camera back during those early Japan trips. We spent a lot of time together that first trip. Me, Dan, Marty and Peter. I remember playing the Grandia demo on Saturn with them in Peter's apartment. Good times.
