The Impossible Shopping List
Man. Today I decided to make a list of all the games (and game systems) I need to buy between now and Dec. 31, and the results are -not- pretty. Between PS3 and Wii and everything else, this is easily going to be the most expensive holiday season ever.

Here's the list as it stands now:

10/25: Phantasy Star Universe (X360/US)
10/26: Tales of the Tempest (DS/JP)
10/31: Final Fantasy XII (PS2/US)
11/2: Every Extend Extra (PSP/US)
11/2: Lumines II (PSP/US)
11/6: Final Fantasy V Advance (GBA/US)
11/7: Gears of War (X360/US)
11/7: Sega Genesis Collection (PS2/US)
11/11: PlayStation 3 (JP)
11/11: Ridge Racer 7 (PS3/JP)
11/14: Final Fantasy III (DS/US)
11/14: Gunpey (DS/US)
11/14: Gunpey (PSP/US)
11/16: Akumajyou Dracula: Gallery of Labyrinth (DS/JP)
11/17: PlayStation 3 (US)
11/17: Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3/US)
11/19: Wii (US)
11/19: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii/US)
11/19: Excite Truck (Wii/US)
11/19: Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (Wii/US)
11/22: Bokura no Taiyou: Django & Sabata (DS/JP)
11/22: Culdcept Saga (X360/JP)
11/22: Jeanne d'Arc (PSP/JP)
11/22: Tales of Destiny (PS2/JP)
12/1: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP/US)
12/2: Wii (JP)
12/2: Odoru Made in Wario (Wii/JP)
12/2: Hajimete no Wii (Wii/JP)
12/7: Blue Dragon (X360/JP)
12/7: Motor Storm (PS3/JP)
12/14: Fushigi no Dungeon: Furai no Shiren DS (DS/JP)
12/21: Ys Origin (PC/JP)
12/21: Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (PSP/JP)
12/21: Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (X360/JP)

Ugh! And that doesn't even include the stuff I'm on the fence about (Yoshi's Island DS, Elite Beat Agents, Gyakuten Saiban 2, Ryuusei no Rockman, .hack//G.U., Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, etc. etc.)

There's no way I can afford all this stuff. I've got to trim it down somehow! Help!

I would say.... let's have a game exchange! I feel the same way as you do actually... there are too many games and I don't have enough money. If you want, we can always swap games for an undetermined length of time

Definitely! We can swap on Thursday nights. :)

You need to narrow your tastes a bit or find a better-paying job that takes less hours. Geez. No real suggestions. I could mention what I'd buy, but that's kind of irrelevant to you. ^_^

You should just learn to love Guitar Hero, and then buy Guitar Hero 2 and play it instead of all those games.

If I can lug Guitar Hero back with me after my trip next month, I will! Really want to play it...just don't wanna ship it. :p

Iunno about the Sega Genesis Collection, I think it would play better with the real controls, hopefully better than that crappy smash pack. Ys sounds like a must, Metal Gear is a must, and FF3.

But the Genesis Collection is on a system whose controller has a D-Pad and buttons. How is that not "real controls"?

I would look myself in the mirror and ask myself if my priorities weren't totally screwed up, especially when half those games will be selling for a measly $20 in a year.

Playing a Genesis game with a controller that has shoulder buttons and a diamond button layout? Are you serious? I'm gonna have to ask you for your hardcore license and registration.

I don't have much of a problem using a standard PSX pad for 2D platformers and the like. I even got pretty good with it for Street Fighter back in the day, though I couldn't do that now.

No, my big problem with this collection will be inaccurate emulation, which Digital Eclipse is notorious for. Thr worst bit will be the line-doubled interlaced graphics, which'll really degrade the image quality of games that should look perfect.

One of the few retropacks that doesn't suffer this avoidable fate is Sega's Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box. It's the gold standard to which other such packages should aspire. Its only shortcoming is that the audio's a bit off. Very minor though.

Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box has completely spoiled me as far as retro packs go :(

I'll still buy the Genesis collection because I'm totally gay for Gain Ground and I'm a real Vectorman mood.

Because I'm honestly too lazy to pull my genesis out of the garage and hook it up :( I could fire 'em up in Kega Fusion (which is two parts awesome and one part badass), but...

....ehh, I'll probably fire them up in Kega Fusion.... and buy the retro pack anyway because I'm retarded for Gain Ground :(

Genesis collection is sadly not going to make the cut. It's true, I own half those games on cart already, and I'm certainly in no rush to play them again, so at the very least, I'll wait. I kinda wish they'd make a 360 version so I can at least get some achievement points for struggling my way through Phantasy Star II again. :)

Yah! I wish they would try to make good remakes to many of their older games or even sequels. I'd love to see NiGHTs remade in high quality, maybe a new Streets of Rage with tons of addons multiplayer modes online and some new music by Yuzo Koshiro. Phantasy Star II is so long and grueling, we need some motive for sure.

okay, I just noticed you have Bokura no Taiyou DS on your original list. That's just sick.

I agree with Xian, only I'd also cut out Gunpey and Motor Storm.

And if you haven't played MGS3 you have NO fucking business buying MGS Portable Ops. Puhfuckinglease.

motorstorm is totally decent. as shane put it, it's the waverace of the PS3 launch. it's totally acceptable to buy it, provided you do it quick!

any mid-rank game that's getting a US version (i.e. boktai) is like whaaaaaaat. i mean hell, culdcept is a Killer App for me but english <3

Hey, I worked on Boktai! Of course I want to play the finished game! :) But to be honest, I may just wait for the US version at this point. I don't think I'd get to it before January anyway.

I did a little bit of work on MPO, too, so I'm already familiar with the plot. :p I really want to play it, though, and I also want to feel like my PSP is actually worth a damn. It's got an inch-thick layer of dust on it right now...

Damn, I didn't realize when reading the original list that there were THREE Tales games on it. And Tales of the Abyss just came out too--granted, that was here and your three are JP releases, but still... No wonder I don't like those games if they're able to make four or five of them a year. :P

heh heh. well, that explains the huge variation in quality and style of the games. my personal credo is, from here on out, to stick only to games by team symphonia as those are the only ones worth playing.

though dabbling in team destiny games is perhaps warranted. my copy of rebirth will tell me, some day, if i ever open it. TOD2 sucked.

Heh heh. Okay, of the ones you crossed off, here are the ones I'm absolutely, positively, still going to buy with my own money (in other words, if there's a chance I might get it for free, I'm not going to list it here):

Tales of the Tempest (already bought it and beat it actually)
Lumines II (can't help it, I'm a junkie)
Gears of War (eager to see if this lives up)
Resistance (ditto; and I need an excuse to spend time with my PS3 this year)
Tales of Destiny (I buy all Tales games. Big fan!)
Odoru Made in Wario (I have to admit, I'm not convinced I'm going to enjoy this, but I still have enough faith left in the series to at least try)
Hajimete no Wii (simple stupid showcase shit FTW!)
TotW: Radiant Mythology (I buy all Tales... yeah.)

I'll remake the list in a week or so after I've made some more cuts. Definitely trimming it down. Thanks for the advice and opinions, too!

yeah, you can buy what you want, but i feel like some of these are skippable. heh. at least don't spend 7000 yen on the tales games; buy them when they hit 2000.

Are those X-Box games region locked or do you have 2 Xboxs? If not, couldn't you just go with one version of PSU?

If you do go Culdcept Saga, we'll have to hook up some time to play it! I'm probably picking up a JP 360 just for this and PSU probably >:D

Not sure on the region locking. I don't actually have my own Japanese X360 but I need to get one for the office, so I'm planning to play Culdcept and Blue Dragon there. The US PSU just arrived today, actually, but I'm not planning to pick up the JP release. One is enough. :)
